“Bologna Alley” historic marker sign unveiling set for October 16!

Please join us on October 16, at 11:30 am,  for the unveiling of a historic street marker designating the area where people line up for our daily lunch program as “Bologna Alley.”   Our daily lunch program has been in operation since 1937 and in recognition of the Cathedral’s charitable undertaking, the Louisville Metro Council has passed a resolution providing for the installation of a “Bologna Alley” historic street marker.   The honorary marker will be installed on the street post of Muhammad Ali Blvd. and Cathedral Way. Tek4Kids, Inc. (Gary and Cathy Boice’s nonprofit) uses education and technology to break the poverty cycle in Haiti.  They provide existing schools in Haiti with clean water, electricity, computers and teachers.  Children share clean water with their families, reducing instances of cholera and waterborne illnesses. Students that receive computer skills from the Tek4Kids program will be able to find much more advanced jobs despite the high unemployment rate in the area. To learn more about Tek4Kids, visit www.tek4kids.org

The ribs of the vaulted ceiling are painted gray and ivory outlined in gold leaf.  Notice the ornate woodcarvings or bosses at the intersections of the ribs.  The bosses were originally installed as a means for ventilation into the attic.  Over the middle aisle there are two smaller bosses; the letters IHS stands for the name of Jesus Christ in Greek; VM stands for Virgo Maria, Virgin Mary in Latin.
