Track 10 – Four Paintings

The four oil paintings in the sanctuary are a notable feature of the Cathedral.  Presented to Bishop Flaget by Pope Gregory XVI, they represent holy people of other times and places.  From left to right the paintings are Blessed Julian of St. Augustine, Blessed Hippolytus Galanti, Blessed Angelo of Acri Receiving Loaf, and Apparition of Our Lady.  The portraits were originally used at St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome during the 1825 ceremonies when their subjects were beatified (proposed as candidates for sainthood).  The paintings reflect the Cathedral’s mission to serve the poor and to provide for the education of children.
